Big Momma Hybrid
The Big Momma is a very large hybrid Roma-type tomato that can be used for sauces and paste. It’s supposedly resistant to Verticillium, Fusarium, Nematodes, and Stemphylium, but not to Tobacco Mosaic Virus, although Burpee notes that the variety’s still too new for them to be sure about the resistances. It is an indeterminate variety which means that it will vine in multiple directions instead of in a single stem.
See the main Tomatoes page for more about growing tomatoes in my area.
Care and Chores
- Planting: Full sun, 3-4 feet apart, 80 days to harvest.
My Notes
- Batch 1: Planting: 23Jan09; first sprout 31Jan09. All got leggy and died. (Actually, they didn’t die, they’re still alive, but that’s just because I’m a twisted SOB that wants to see what happens if I let them continue to grow.)
- Batch 2: Planted 12Feb09, potted 26Feb09, in ground 6Mar09. Broke my organic promises and fertilized with a commercial tomato fertilizer because the stalks and leaves were looking red/purple, which could be a nutrient deficiency.
- aaaaand they’re all dead, ‘cept for one that lived long enough to put into an upside-down planter.
