Beneficial Bugs
Q: What’s the best way to manage insects in your garden without having to layer on the pesticides and invest in expensive hybrid seeds (Which I did this year before I knew any better…)?
A: Fight bugs with bugs! Invest in some things that will attract beneficial bugs.
I’m planting, in all three gardens that “matter” to me: Coriander (Cilantro), Marigolds (Two types: Dwarf Bolero and Yellow/Mixed), Prairie Sunflower, two varieties of Cosmos, Purple Coneflowers, and several others that I splurged on seeds for. I need to draw up the bed plans tonight..!
In the back garden, I’m also expecting my Provence Lavender to give me a boost by attracting hoverflies and others.
I’m also providing a bird-free area for the bugs to roost. I’ve spread bird netting over the top of the garden to keep grackles from destroying my tomato plants like they did on multiple occasions last year.
