Hangin’ Tomaters

I’ve mentioned over the past few days the upside-down tomato planter idea. The Upside-Down Tomato Planter at Amazon is $15 … and mine cost me less than $2 in bolts and washers and duct tape, as suggested by the Cheap Vegetable Gardener. I’ve seen other implementations; some people use 5 gallon buckets (and plant annuals in the tops).

The first victim was a Sweet 100 seedling that I had sitting around; future victims will include other tomato seedlings, zucchini and maybe even beans…

  • good job on the home-made upside down tomato planter. Unfortunately, all my tomato plants are now too big for this but I may try a squash plant to see how it does.

I really like the cross beam idea for hanging plants, also, I really like how you’ve hung your garden tools right on the cage. I am building a cage of sorts to protect my containers from my puppy.

  • Thanks, David! Just watch your head once you’ve hung stuff. The baskets ended up being too big and I had to move them really close to the edge on hangars attached to the post.

Smart man for just admitting you’re going to need the cage now against a determined puppy. ;) You don’t have to go as all-out as I did — the 8 ft “landscape timbers” are only $2/apiece at Home Depot on sale right now. Those and a box of bolts would be sufficient … I could probably have done the whole enclosure for $30-40 as opposed to the $100 I spent on the wood. On the other hand, mine has worked REALLY well, esp. now that I’m leaving the dogs out in the yard for most of the day.
