Weekend Work

Last weekend was a busy one. I decided to do something about the decidedly lackluster front yard, and my roommate (who owns the house I live in) ponied up for materials. I just had to provide the labor.

And labor I did; I moved about 140 square feet of sod from the front yard into the backyard, and then moved 1500 lbs of limestone into a bed and retaining wall. The issue was complicated a bit because our front yard is graded REALLY strangely; the lawn comes up to the edge of the front porch just fine, but the front edge of the front porch is three inches lower than the plane of the rest of the foundation. On the side of the house, almost an entire foot of the foundation is exposed. To “hide” that, or at least keep it from annoying me, I had to build the bed wall another layer higher on the side of the house, drop down a level in the middle so that it would match where the slope dips, and then meet the edge of the driveway.

That’s probably easier to explain with pictures.

From the driveway, note where the stone slopes.

I’m extremely pleased with the way it turned out, and can’t wait to get the bushes in the front separated and replanted so that they stop looking so crowded together and have room to grow.
