Jiffy Pods – Remove the Netting

Well, my Jiffy Pot experiences were lackluster, so I’d recommend not using them. But if you do — do something I didn’t, and remove the netting!

These pictures from Gardenweb are pretty amazing… amazingly bad, that is! Poor plant!

  • I generally take the netting off but I’d say that a good portion of the time I don’t. I have always seen the roots grow through the netting though. In fact, I’ve been using the pellets for 6 years and I have never seen the roots bound inside the netting. I have seen a few hollow pellets, or rather, they have a hollow tube inside and the seed will fall deep into it and not germinate.
My problem with the pellets is the fact that peat is not a renewable resource and I’ve heard that we destroy habitats to harvest it. I swear this year I’ll find the money to buy one of those earth cube makers or at the very least, I will attempt to make one using one of the DIY guides available on the Internet.
